Dragons are one of the most important neutral objectives on Summoner's Rift and one of the most mismanaged by players below Diamond. Securing the first dragon, stacking souls, and denying the Elder Dragon in the late game can single-handedly decide matches, but knowing which dragon to prioritize, when to fight, and when to give it up requires understanding what each type of dragon actually offers your team.
This guide covers all 7 dragon types, what every buff does, how the Dragon Soul works, the Elder Dragon, and how to adapt your objective strategy based on your team composition.

Where Is the Dragon?
The dragon spawns in the south river, on the bottom side of the map. Timing:
- First dragon: spawns at 5 minutes
- Respawn after kill: 5 minutes after being slain (up to 4 elemental dragons)
- Elder Dragon: replaces the elemental dragon once a team has collected 4 dragon stacks (or after 35 minutes regardless of stacks)
All 7 Dragon Types and Their Buffs
Each game has a dragon sequence determined randomly at the start. The type of the first dragon to appear sets which Soul will be available in that game, with the exception of the Elder Dragon.
Infernal Dragon ๐ฅ
Buff per stack: Increases damage dealt by abilities and basic attacks
- Stack 1: +4% damage
- Stack 2: +8% total (cumulative)
- Stack 3: +12% total (cumulative)
Infernal Soul: Hitting abilities and basic attacks creates an area explosion that deals bonus damage
Priority: High for assassin, burst mage, and ADC compositions. One of the highest-impact dragons for carry-focused teams.
Mountain Dragon โฐ๏ธ
Buff per stack: Increases damage dealt to towers and objectives (bonus true damage)
Mountain Soul: Creates a massive shield when you have not taken damage for a few seconds
Priority: High for split-push and objective-focused compositions. The Soul's passive shield is extremely strong in late-game teamfights and sieges.
Ocean Dragon ๐
Buff per stack: Increases health and mana regeneration out of combat
Ocean Soul: Heals a percentage of damage taken during combat
Priority: High for lane bully and sustain-dependent compositions. Less relevant for teams that already have heavy healing from a support.
Cloud Dragon โ๏ธ
Buff per stack: Reduces the cooldown of Teleport and increases out-of-combat movement speed
Cloud Soul: Dramatically reduces ultimate cooldowns for all team members
Priority: Extremely high for compositions with high-impact ultimates (Amumu, Orianna, Maokai, Malphite). Can be the single most game-changing objective for specific drafts.
Hextech Dragon โก
Buff per stack: Reduces the cooldown of all active items
Hextech Soul: Periodically slows enemies and deals electrical damage in combat
Priority: Moderate. Most relevant for champions that rely on active items (Zhonya's, Galeforce, Everfrost).
Chemtech Dragon ๐งช
Buff per stack: Increases damage dealt by abilities that apply slows, stuns, or other crowd control
Chemtech Soul: Applies a debuff on nearby enemies that amplifies the damage they receive
Priority: High for CC-heavy compositions. Synergizes strongly with supports and tanks that keep enemies locked down.
Elder Dragon ๐๏ธ
The Elder Dragon is the most powerful objective in the game. It does not follow the elemental sequence and spawns once any team has collected 4 dragon stacks, or after 35 minutes.
Elder Dragon Buff: Executes enemies below a health threshold and massively increases the damage output of the team that killed it
Respawn: Elder Dragon respawns every 6 minutes after being killed, until the end of the game.
Priority: Maximum. The Elder Dragon buff is capable of deciding the game on its own when used to press objectives or initiate late-game teamfights.

What Is the Dragon Soul?
The Dragon Soul is earned when a team kills the 4th elemental dragon in a game. The team receives a permanent buff corresponding to the dragon type of that game (determined by the first elemental dragon to spawn).
Key rules about the Dragon Soul:
- Only one team can hold the Dragon Soul per game
- The Soul is permanent and persists until the end of the game
- You do not need to kill 4 dragons of the same type: the Soul always corresponds to the type of the first dragon that spawned
- Dying does not remove the Soul once your team has earned it
How to Prioritize Dragons Based on Your Composition
Not every composition needs to prioritize the same dragon. Use this approach:
- Identify the dragon type for the game (check which dragon spawned first)
- Assess whether the Soul benefits your team more than the enemy
- If yes: make the dragon a priority. Create map pressure, force teamfights at the pit, and maintain vision control
- If no (dragon benefits the enemy more): consider trading the dragon for other objectives like towers, Baron, or Herald
For example: if the game has Cloud Dragon and the enemy team has Amumu, Orianna, and Lux, fighting for every dragon at all costs may be a mistake. In that case, trading dragons for map pressure and tower plates could be the better strategic call.

Vision Control Around the Dragon Pit
Establishing vision control before contesting the dragon is essential. Recommended ward positions:
- Ward inside the brush on the river side of the pit entrance
- Ward in the tri-bush (triangle) to anticipate flanks and approaches from mid
- Control Ward (pink ward) inside the dragon pit itself to deny enemy vision before the fight
Clear enemy wards before you begin attacking the dragon. A Baron or Dragon stolen by an enemy who was hiding in a ward inside the pit is one of the most common objective losses in mid-level play.

Pro Tips: Dragons in LoL
- Always plant vision before 4 minutes 30 seconds: the dragon spawns at 5 minutes. Having wards placed before that window lets you know if the enemy is planning an aggressive early contest.
- Use Rift Herald to create map pressure and free up the dragon: if the enemy team is defending Herald in the mid lane, your team can use that moment of split pressure to secure the dragon uncontested.
- Never start the dragon without knowing where all 5 enemy players are: beginning the objective with missing enemies is the single most common reason teams lose dragons in LoL.
FAQ: Dragons in LoL
- Can the enemy team steal my Dragon Soul? No. The Dragon Soul is earned permanently by the team that kills the 4th dragon. The enemy team cannot take or remove your Soul.
- What happens if both teams have 3 dragon stacks each? Whichever team kills the next dragon first earns the Soul. This creates one of the most high-stakes dragon fights in the game.
- Does the Elder Dragon appear even if no team has 4 stacks? Yes, after 35 minutes the Elder Dragon spawns regardless of dragon stack count.
