Elden Ring Classes are the foundation of your entire playthrough, determining your starting gear, stat spread, and the most efficient path to your intended build. Choosing the wrong starting class does not lock you out of any playstyle, but it does mean wasting attribute points on stats you will never use - a cost that compounds through the entire game.

Elden ring classes fall into three broad categories: melee-focused starters, spellcasting starters, and hybrid classes that blend combat approaches. Each of the 10 available classes begins with a specific set of attributes, a unique equipment loadout, and a Keepsake item selected at character creation. Understanding these differences before starting your first playthrough prevents the most common beginner frustration of reaching mid-game and realizing your class is mismatched with your evolving playstyle.

The most important truth about Elden Ring’s class system is that the starting class determines your initial stat floor, not your final build. Any class can eventually become any build with enough leveling. However, classes that align with your intended style reach their power spikes faster and waste fewer of the limited attribute points that your character accumulates over the entire game.

Elden Ring Classes: All 10 Ranked for Beginners

Best Classes for New Players

Vagabond is the top recommendation for first-time players and most melee-focused builds. It starts with 15 Vigor, the highest of any class, giving you noticeably more HP from the first encounter. Its stat spread minimizes wasted points for players who plan to focus on Strength or Dexterity melee builds. It also starts with a solid sword-and-shield combination that teaches the blocking mechanic naturally.

Samurai is the second-best choice for beginners, particularly those interested in Dexterity or bleed builds. The katana starting weapon is one of the strongest early-game weapons, and the included Longbow provides a ranged option that makes early exploration significantly less punishing. Many veteran players actually choose Samurai for optimized Dex/Blood builds due to its excellent min-max efficiency.

Hero starts with the highest Strength stat at 16, making it the ideal class for players who want to use colossal weapons and heavy Strength builds immediately. It is slightly less versatile than Vagabond but reaches Strength-build power thresholds faster.

Elden Ring Classes: Melee Starters

Vagabond

The Vagabond is the ideal first-playthrough class. Starting at Level 9 with 15 Vigor provides a substantial health advantage that makes the early game’s brutal encounters more survivable. The longsword and kite shield loadout is balanced, teaching both offensive and defensive combat naturally.

For Strength builds, the Vagabond reaches every weapon requirement with fewer wasted investment points than any other class. It is the go-to for players planning:

  • Straight sword and medium-shield builds
  • Colossal weapon Strength builds
  • Quality builds (Strength + Dexterity hybrid)

Samurai

The Samurai’s Uchigatana katana starts with the Unsheathe weapon art, a powerful Dexterity-scaling skill that remains viable through the endgame. The included Longbow with a supply of arrows means you never have to approach dangerous enemies directly during exploration.

For Dexterity and Blood builds, the Samurai is the most stat-efficient starting class in the game. It is the preferred pick for:

  • Dex-scaling katana builds
  • Bleed status effect builds
  • Quality builds that include ranged flexibility

Hero and Warrior

Hero begins with 16 Strength and is built specifically for colossal weapons. It reaches weapon requirements like Greatswords and Ultra Greatswords before other classes and wastes no points on caster stats.

Warrior starts with 16 Dexterity and dual-wielded curved swords, with higher Agility than any other class. It is the starting point for speed-focused dual-wield builds but has lower Vigor than Vagabond or Hero, making early survival harder for new players.

Elden Ring Classes: Spellcasting Starters

Astrologer

The Astrologer begins with 16 Intelligence and comes with two Sorcery spells already equipped. It is the most popular class for pure Intelligence/Sorcery builds because it reaches INT thresholds for powerful late-game spells significantly faster than other classes.

The Glintstone Pebble and Glintstone Arc starting spells are efficient, versatile tools that carry sorcery-focused players through most of the early and mid-game without needing additional scrolls. The tradeoff is starting Vigor of just 9, making the Astrologer fragile until significant HP investment is made.

Prophet

The Prophet is the Faith counterpart to the Astrologer, beginning with 16 Faith and the Catch Flame incantation. It is the efficient starting class for pure Faith builds and Incantation-focused playthroughs. Like the Astrologer, its low Vigor makes early survivability challenging.

Confessor and Prisoner

Confessor is a hybrid class that blends melee combat with Faith-based incantations. It starts with a solid sword and shield alongside Faith spellcasting tools, making it the most accessible Faith-melee hybrid starting point.

Prisoner blends Intelligence sorcery with Dexterity melee in a similar hybrid approach. It is less immediately powerful than pure Astrologer but more versatile for players who want both melee and casting.

Elden Ring Classes: Special Options

Bandit

The Bandit has the highest starting Arcane at 14, which scales with bleed and poison effects and affects item drop rates. It is the starting point for Arcane bleed builds using weapons like the Rivers of Blood katana. The starting Arcane is meaningfully higher than any other class, making it the most efficient option specifically for that build archetype.

Wretch

The Wretch starts at Level 1 with every stat at 10, wearing only a loincloth and carrying a club. It is the complete blank slate option designed for experienced players who want to min-max their final level as precisely as possible. Because every stat starts equally, it reaches exactly the right distribution for any build with no wasted points.

The Wretch is not recommended for first-time players. Its extreme fragility and weak starting equipment demand familiarity with Elden Ring’s combat system that new players have not yet developed.

Pro Tips: Elden Ring Classes

  • Choose Vagabond for your first playthrough without overthinking it: The extra HP and versatile stat spread are the most forgiving combination for learning the game’s mechanics without already knowing the combat system intimately.
  • Do not build based on your starting class equipment: The starting weapon and armor are replaced within the first few hours. Your class matters for stats, not gear.
  • Wretch is only efficient if you know exactly what final build you are targeting: The Level 1 start with all-10 stats saves 5-8 total levels on heavily optimized builds, but only when you know precisely where every point will go from the start.
  • Arcane scaling is unique to Bandit in the starting roster: No other class starts with Arcane above 11. For Rivers of Blood or other Arcane bleed builds, Bandit’s 14 starting Arcane saves real attribute investment.
  • Use Larval Tears to respec if you change your mind: Elden Ring allows full attribute reallocation using Larval Tears at Rennala. You are never permanently locked into your starting class’s direction.

Common Mistakes Elden Ring Classes Players Make

  1. Picking Wretch as a first-time player because it sounds like a challenge. The Wretch’s difficulty comes from a stat and gear disadvantage that punishes players who do not already understand the game well. Fix: Reserve the Wretch for second or third playthroughs where you know exactly what build you intend to complete.
  2. Investing in high-cost spellcasting stats on a melee class without planning. Players who start as a Vagabond and then invest heavily in Intelligence lose dozens of attribute points that could have gone to scaling stats for their weapons. Fix: Decide your broad build category (melee, caster, hybrid) before selecting a class and commit to that direction through at least the first major region.
  3. Ignoring Vigor at low levels on spellcasting classes. Astrologer and Prophet players who invest all early points into their casting stats find themselves dying to single hits in the Stormveil or Raya Lucaria area. Fix: Raise Vigor to at least 20 on caster classes before investing further into Intelligence or Faith beyond what your starting spells require.
