Best Build for Warlock in Dota 2: 🧙 Complete Guide for Patch 7.41e ⚡

4 min

Warlock is Dota 2’s most teamfight-centric support hero. His ultimate, Chaotic Offering, summons a Golem that knocks down all nearby enemies and provides a massive physical presence for the duration. Combined with Fatal Bonds (which chains damage between multiple enemies) and Shadow Word (sustained healing or damage), Warlock excels in fights that last long enough for his abilities to compound.

Warlock’s Abilities

Fatal Bonds: Links a group of enemy units together. A portion of the damage one linked unit takes is shared across all others. The more enemies hit by a single attack or spell while linked, the more amplified the total damage output becomes.

Shadow Word: Channels healing on a friendly hero or deals damage over time on an enemy. One of the strongest single-target sustain heals in the support toolkit.

Upheaval (Passive with active): A channeled ability that creates a spiraling AoE slow. The longer Warlock channels, the stronger the slow. Useful for chase scenarios and holding enemies in Fatal Bonds.

Chaotic Offering (Ultimate): Warlock casts a boulder from the sky that stuns all enemies near the impact point, then summons a Golem at that location. The Golem has high HP, deals physical damage, and has the Flaming Fists ability (chance to deal AoE damage on attacks). With Aghanim’s Scepter, the Golem splits into two smaller ones on death.

Best Items for Warlock (Patch 7.41e)

Support build (Position 5):

ItemWhy
Magic Stick / WandBurst HP and mana in scrappy fights
Arcane BootsMana regen for sustained Fatal Bonds and Shadow Word
Glimmer CapeSelf-invisibility during Chaotic Offering cast (prevents interruption)
Aghanim’s ScepterGolem splits into two on death; massive teamfight upgrade
Refresher OrbDouble Chaotic Offering; two Golems active simultaneously
Force StaffRepositioning and escape; enables better Chaotic Offering angles

Luxury items:

  • Octarine Core (cooldown reduction for more frequent Chaotic Offering)
  • Aeon Disk (survival if caught out of position during channeling)

The Refresher + Aghanim’s Combo: summon a Golem (2 mini-Golems on death) with the first Chaotic Offering, immediately Refresh, summon a second Golem (2 more mini-Golems on death). Four Golems total if both die, creating a physical chaos that most teams cannot deal with in a single teamfight.

Skill Order

  1. Fatal Bonds (level 1) — chain damage from the first fight
  2. Shadow Word (level 2) — sustain for allied carry
  3. Fatal Bonds (levels 3, 4, 5) — max first for link count and duration
  4. Shadow Word (levels 7, 8, 9) — max second
  5. Chaotic Offering (levels 6, 12, 18) — ultimate whenever available
  6. Upheaval (level 11+) — after both primary abilities are maxed

When to Pick Warlock

Ideal scenarios:

  • Enemy team has heroes that group closely (Wraith King, Phantom Lancer illusions, Nature’s Prophet summons)
  • Your team has other long-duration fight heroes (Centaur Warrunner, Underlord aura)
  • Enemy lacks reliable ways to kill the Golem quickly before it disrupts their formation

Avoid Warlock when:

  • Enemy team has multiple channeling interrupt abilities (Doom, Silencer with Global Silence)
  • The enemy draft is split-pushing focused with no incentive to group
  • Your team lacks other initiation tools (Warlock cannot initiate himself effectively)

Fatal Bonds Strategy

Fatal Bonds is most powerful when it connects four or five enemies simultaneously. The optimal timing:

  1. Wait for enemies to group for a fight or objective (Roshan, barracks siege)
  2. Cast Fatal Bonds from the edge of range to link as many targets as possible
  3. Follow immediately with Chaotic Offering stun
  4. The Golem’s AoE physical attacks now chain the damage across all linked heroes

A single multi-target spell (Leshrac’s Pulse Nova, Earthshaker’s Echo Slam) while Fatal Bonds is active deals the total damage plus shared damage across all links, creating exponential total damage output.

Play Warlock with ExitLag

Warlock’s Chaotic Offering has a long cast animation that can be interrupted. Landing the boulder stun at the correct position requires your cast to reach the server the instant you click. Latency that delays the projectile arc can miss the grouped enemies you targeted if they move even one step. ExitLag minimizes the delay between your cast input and Valve’s server registration.

Pro Tips: Warlock in Dota 2

  • Cast Shadow Word on yourself before starting Chaotic Offering channel: the heal on yourself during the channel animation increases your survivability if enemies try to focus you to interrupt the ultimate.
  • Use Glimmer Cape immediately before casting Chaotic Offering: activating Glimmer Cape first gives you magic resistance and invisibility during the cast animation, making it significantly harder for enemies to interrupt the channel.
  • Save Refresher Orb for after the first Golem dies, not immediately: refreshing immediately while the first Golem is alive wastes the second summon’s Golem overlap time. Wait for the first Golem to die before refreshing for maximum active Golem uptime.
