Update Size and Pre-Load

The update can be pre-loaded on Battle.net on PC before launch and is approximately 6.2 GB. Season 4 officially launches on August 11, 2026 at 11 AM PT. Pre-load the roughly 6.2 GB update on Battle.net for PC before then, keep the launcher open, and you can queue in the moment servers flip over.

If you did not pre-load before launch: the 6.2 GB download needs to complete before you can play. On most broadband connections this takes 5 to 20 minutes depending on speed. Start the download immediately if you have not already.

When Did Season 3 End?

Season 3, called Into the Tiger’s Den, ran from June 16 to August 11 and introduced Shion, the Neon Junction map, and the Ultra cosmetic tier.

Season 3 ended precisely when Season 4 began. Any unclaimed Season 3 Battle Pass rewards that were not collected before 11 AM PT on August 11 are no longer accessible through normal means. Check the Unvaulted Passes feature launching in September for a possible second chance at some Season 3 cosmetics — though Mythic Prisms, Prestige titles, and Mythic skins from Season 3 will not be included in that return.

When Does Season 4 End?

Season 4 sits inside the yearlong Overwatch Reign of Talon story arc. Expect roughly nine weeks of content, pushing the season’s end toward mid-October, conveniently in time for Halloween Terror to arrive.

Estimated Season 4 end: approximately October 11, 2026.

The nine-week window aligns with the pattern Blizzard established for Reign of Talon seasons and positions Season 4’s conclusion for the typical late-October Halloween Terror event window.

Why August 11? The Battle Pass Timer Logic

The Overwatch Season 4 release date is confirmed for Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the exact moment Season 3’s Battle Pass expires. New seasons tend to drop on the exact same day that the previous one ends, usually on a Tuesday, consistent with what Blizzard has delivered throughout 2026.

Blizzard does not leave gaps between seasons. The Battle Pass countdown in the Season 3 client was the most reliable indicator of Season 4’s exact start date before the official confirmation.

What to Do Right Now

If you are reading this on or after August 11:

  1. Open Battle.net or your platform’s storefront and let the 6.2 GB update download if it has not started automatically
  2. Check your Season 3 Battle Pass status — any unclaimed tiers are locked until Unvaulted Passes launch in September
  3. Queue into Quick Play first to experience D.Mon and the reworked maps before entering ranked
  4. Complete placement matches to establish your Season 4 rank under the new Emerald rank system
  5. Select your Reward Track in the Season 4 Battle Pass after completing the Introductory Track

Launch Day Server Queues

Expect longer queues right after launch. If you cannot get in immediately, wait a few minutes and try again rather than reinstalling.

Season launches consistently produce the highest server load of any point in a season’s lifecycle. The combination of update deployment, new hero unlocks, and simultaneous global login creates peak congestion in the first 1 to 3 hours. If you cannot connect at 11 AM PT, waiting 30 to 60 minutes and trying again is more effective than any troubleshooting step.

Play Overwatch Season 4 with ExitLag

Launch day server load affects everyone’s connection quality, not just players with inherently high ping. ISP routing to Blizzard’s servers becomes more variable when traffic spikes globally, adding latency and packet loss that do not appear during off-peak sessions.

ExitLag is a connection optimizer used by over 30 million players across 4,000+ game titles including Overwatch. It analyzes multiple network routes in real time and selects the fastest, most stable path between your device and Blizzard’s servers, bypassing the congested ISP routing nodes that peak launch traffic creates.

  • Real-Time Optimization: Selects the lowest-latency path to Blizzard’s servers throughout the session, including during the first-day spike
  • Multipath Technology: Sends your game data through multiple simultaneous paths so a single congested node does not spike your latency during a ranked placement match
  • Traffic Shaper: Prioritizes Overwatch above background applications so the 6.2 GB update downloading on a secondary device does not affect your in-game ping

Pro Tips: Overwatch Season 4 Launch Day

  • Do not play ranked in the first hour: placement matches during launch-day server peak produce rank outcomes that do not reflect your actual performance. The first 60 minutes of any major update consistently have the most volatile server conditions of the entire season.
  • Download the update immediately if it has not auto-started: the update does not download while Overwatch is running. Close the game, let Battle.net download the 6.2 GB update, then reopen. Players who skip this step and try to launch discover the download mid-session.
  • Try D.Mon in Quick Play before any ranked session: D.Mon is a new hero whose kit no existing player has muscle memory for yet. The first few sessions with any new hero produce performance below your normal ceiling. Banking placement match results on a hero you have never played is a high variance decision.
