When Can You First Ascend?
Ascendancy is unlocked in Act 2 by completing your first Trial of Ascendancy. The earliest possible point to reach your first Ascendancy is mid-Act 2, after defeating Balbala the Traitor to obtain the required key items.
Complete Ascendancy unlock progression:
- Act 2: Complete Trial of the Sekhemas (requires Balbala's Barya) - unlocks Ascendancy Class + 2 passive points
- Act 3: Complete Trial of Chaos (requires Chimeral Inscribed Ultimatum) - unlocks Ascendancy passive points 3 and 4
- Endgame Trial (Level 60+): Higher difficulty Trial of Sekhemas - unlocks points 5 and 6
- Endgame Trial (Level 65+): Highest difficulty combined Trial - unlocks points 7 and 8
Each Ascendancy passive tree has roughly 20 nodes. Eight Ascendancy passive points give you access to the most impactful notables while leaving some optional nodes accessible through additional endgame Trial runs.

Can You Change Your Path Of Exile 2 Ascendancy?
Your Ascendancy Class choice is permanent. You cannot switch from, for example, Deadeye to Amazon after selecting Deadeye.
However, you can respec your Ascendancy passive points at any time. Speak to The Hooded One in any town to reallocate your Ascendancy nodes. The cost is Gold, which is freely available throughout the game. This means you can experiment with different node configurations within your chosen Ascendancy without starting a new character.
If you absolutely need to change Ascendancy class, a Devastating Orb of Annulment resets your Ascendancy and removes all allocated points. You must then re-earn those points by completing the Trials again.

Path Of Exile 2 Best Ascendancy By Class
Ranger: Deadeye
Deadeye is the strongest Ranger Ascendancy and the most-played subclass in the entire game. Its Wind Ward node provides a substantial defensive layer by generating a protective ward while you are moving, which synergizes naturally with the Ranger's high-mobility playstyle. Gathering Winds adds a stacking movement speed and projectile speed buff that compounds with Lightning Arrow's chaining behavior.
Sorceress: Stormweaver
Stormweaver is the best Sorceress Ascendancy for endgame power, though it has a slightly slower campaign compared to alternatives. The Arcane Surge interaction generates energy shield recovery from spell casting, creating a self-sustaining defensive loop. During endgame, Stormweaver produces the highest spell damage ceiling available to the Sorceress class.
Witch: Lich Or Infernalist
Both Witch Ascendancies are viable, but for different purposes. Lich is stronger for Chaos damage-over-time builds like ED Contagion, providing flat chaos damage and life-to-ES mechanics. Infernalist is stronger for minion builds, enabling fire-based spectres and providing significant minion scaling nodes. Choose based on your preferred build direction.
Huntress: Spirit Walker (New In Patch 0.5)
Spirit Walker is one of the most exciting new additions in the current meta. Its ability to tame Pinnacle Bosses is genuinely unique in Path of Exile 2, and the Primal Bounty projectile enhancement creates strong synergy with Twister and other high-projectile-count skills. Strong pick for Patch 0.5's Runes of Aldur league.
Trial Of Sekhemas: Complete Walkthrough
How The Trial Works
The Trial of Sekhemas is a roguelike gauntlet that tests your character's ability to survive without taking damage. The core mechanic is the Honor resource.
- Your Honor depletes every time you take a hit, separate from your Life
- If Honor reaches zero, you fail the trial and must restart
- Relics dropped by monsters inside the trial add Honor Resistance, reducing Honor damage per hit
- Boons are offered between floors that provide bonuses for the rest of the run
- Afflictions are negative modifiers that sometimes appear with boons
Key tips for Trial of Sekhemas:
- Prioritize Honor Resistance relics above all other drops inside the trial
- Take boons that provide defensive bonuses on the first two floors
- Save offensive boons for floor three and four, after survivability is established
- The boss is Balbala the Traitor: dodge her ground-slam after each repositioning phase
- If you fail multiple times, reduce difficulty by one tier and practice mechanics
Trial Difficulty Levels
| Difficulty | Area Level | Ascendancy Points Reward | Requirement |
| Difficulty 1 | Any | Points 1-2 | Balbala's Barya (quest item) |
| Difficulty 2 | 45+ | Points 3-4 | Upgraded Barya |
| Difficulty 3 | 60+ | Points 5-6 | Level 60+ Djinn Barya |
| Difficulty 4 | 65+ | Points 7-8 | Level 65+ Djinn Barya |
Trial Of Chaos: How To Complete It
Overview
The Trial of Chaos is the second main Ascendancy Trial, unlocked in Act 3 through the Chimeral Inscribed Ultimatum quest. It uses a different mechanic from the Trial of Sekhemas.
How it works:
- The trial presents a series of discrete challenge rooms rather than a continuous gauntlet
- Challenge types include: Escape Trial (disable Death Crystals on a timer), Ritual Trial (defeat Ritual Casters), Hourglass Trial, Chalice Trial, and Gauntlet Trial
- Successfully completing all room types within a run awards Ascendancy points
The Trial of Chaos is generally considered easier than the Trial of Sekhemas for builds with strong damage output, since it requires active combat more than it requires precision avoidance.
Pro Tips: Path Of Exile 2 Ascendancy Trials
- Complete your first Ascendancy as early as possible. Two Ascendancy passive points gained in Act 2 instead of Act 3 can mean two to three additional campaign hours played at full build strength. Prioritize the Trial of Sekhemas immediately when it becomes available.
- Bring flask charges to the Trial of Sekhemas. Your Life flasks still function inside the trial. However, Honor damage ignores Life, so flasks do not prevent trial failure directly. Use them to maintain Life for burst moments while relying on Honor Resistance relics for sustained survivability.
- Research your Ascendancy node order before entering any Trial. Knowing your first two node picks before entering the trial prevents hesitation at the Ascendancy selection screen. The first two nodes often define the rest of your build's direction.
- Do not take Afflictions with Honor damage modifiers at early difficulty levels. Some Afflictions specifically increase Honor damage taken. At Difficulty 1 and 2, these Afflictions are significantly more trial-ending than any other modifier. Skip boons that are tied to these Afflictions entirely.
- Use the in-game Ascendancy passive planner (added in Patch 0.5) to map your full Ascendancy tree. This new feature shows the complete tree including all notables and their interactions, making node selection decisions before completing the Trial much faster.
Common Path Of Exile 2 Ascendancy Mistakes
- Selecting an Ascendancy based on the name or fantasy rather than the passive nodes. Every Ascendancy has a fantasy theme, but the mechanical value comes entirely from the passive nodes. Fix: read every notable description before selecting your Ascendancy class. The name tells you nothing about whether the mechanics complement your build.
- Not completing endgame Trials for points 5-8. Many players stop after the Act 3 Trial and enter endgame with only four Ascendancy points. Fix: complete the Difficulty 3 endgame Trial as soon as your character reaches level 60. Points 5 and 6 often include your Ascendancy's most powerful capstone notables.
- Reallocating Ascendancy nodes too frequently early in the league. Every respec costs Gold, and Gold is valuable in the first week of a league. Fix: plan your full eight-point Ascendancy node allocation before spending any points, and only respec if a fundamental build direction change is necessary.
How ExitLag Helps During Ascendancy Trials
The Trial of Sekhemas is one of the few places in Path of Exile 2 where a single lag spike directly causes an immediate failure state. If a lag spike causes you to take an unintended hit while low on Honor, the run ends regardless of your skill or preparation.
ExitLag is not a VPN. It is a game connection optimizer that maintains a stable, low-latency connection to Path of Exile 2's servers. For precision-based content like the Trial of Sekhemas, where each hit has consequences to your Honor resource, a stable connection eliminates the most common non-skill cause of trial failures.
Download ExitLag atexitlag.com/download and complete your Path of Exile 2 Ascendancy Trials without network interference.

Path of Exile 2 ascendancy selection is the single most impactful build decision you make in the game. Whether you choose the consistent power of Deadeye, the elemental depth of Stormweaver, or the unique companion mechanics of Spirit Walker, your Ascendancy defines your entire character identity. Complete your first Trial in Act 2, plan your node allocation before selecting, and invest in Path of Exile 2 ascendancy point progression as a top priority when entering the endgame Atlas.
