Battlefield 6’s Top Gun update launches on August 18, 2026 at 08:00 UTC, bringing the franchise’s biggest collaboration yet. Wake Island returns rebuilt for the modern engine. Two new two-seat jets enter the fleet. A new carrier-focused game mode and a Gauntlet mission join the roster. And Spectator Mode with Custom Lobbies arrives through Battlefield Labs. Here is everything confirmed.

What Is the Top Gun Update?

Electronic Arts and DICE announced the Top Gun update for Battlefield 6, which will be available for free on August 18, 2026, as part of Season 4. The key addition will be the return of the classic Wake Island map, recreated on a modern engine with an emphasis on large-scale combined battles across land, air, and sea.

The update is Phase 2 of Battlefield 6’s Season 4. Season 4 opened July 21 with the Tsuru Reef map, which introduced a dynamic wave system, before moving into the Top Gun collaboration. The season’s third phase, Tidal Strike, is scheduled for September 15.

The update comes from a partnership with Paramount Games Studio announced July 17, 2026.

New Map: Wake Island

The Pacific island has been a staple of the series since Battlefield 1942. DICE is rebuilding the Pacific map for the current generation of consoles and PC. The package includes beaches, bunkers, and the open ocean for battles on land, sea, and air.

Wake Island is redesigned with a focus on naval combat. Teams spawn aboard aircraft carriers which act as their respective headquarters. Players have a choice between taking down enemies in the air, on land, and at sea. Both teams’ aircraft carriers act as major objectives during gameplay in Carrier Strike.

The aircraft carrier headquarters is the defining change from previous Wake Island versions. The carrier is not just a spawn point: it is a destructible objective that both teams fight to protect and destroy simultaneously.

The RCB-90 patrol boat carries a cannon and mortars and turns any coastline into a shooting gallery for infantry who thought the beach was safe. The dynamic wave system makes open water choppy enough to wreck your aim while sheltering flankers.

Wake Island will be available in Verified Experiences at launch and later in Custom Experiences as the season progresses.

New Mode: Top Gun — Carrier Strike

Carrier Strike is a new mode where both teams fight to destroy the enemy carrier. Capture key sectors across the island, deploy vehicles, and create openings for pilots to strike deeper into enemy territory. As the carrier takes damage, the battle escalates with a final objective inside the vessel, turning the match into one last coordinated assault to finish the fight.

The multi-stage structure of Carrier Strike is the most ambitious mode design in Battlefield 6’s history:

  1. Capture phase: teams fight for missile launch sites on land
  2. Breach phase: captured sites launch strikes that damage the enemy carrier’s hull
  3. Interior assault: once the carrier is sufficiently damaged, the final objective moves inside the ship for close-quarters infantry combat

Fans of Battlefield 4 will feel a surge of nostalgia. This mode bridges the gap between large-scale vehicle warfare and tactical room clearing.

New Mode: Gauntlet — Fighter Sweep

Fighter Sweep arrives in REDSEC as a new Gauntlet mission. Take down enemy jets and destroy stockpiles placed across the playspace to build your team’s score.

Fighter Sweep is a REDSEC-exclusive Gauntlet course built entirely around aerial combat. Teams earn score by downing enemy jets and destroying supply stockpiles distributed across Wake Island. The Gauntlet format creates a score-based aerial race that rewards both individual dogfighting skill and coordinated target prioritization.

2 New Fighter Jets

New vehicles and aircraft form the core of the expansion. The F/A-81F Super Spectre and the F-74A Seacat, two two-seat jet types, are added to the fleet. The focus is clearly on teamwork in the cockpit. Players take on separate roles for flight control and weapon systems.

F/A-81F Super Spectre: The heavier of the two new jets, designed for multi-role operations. One seat handles flight; the second handles weapon systems and electronic warfare. Designed for mixed air-to-air and air-to-ground roles.

F-74A Seacat: Series debut of the F-74A Seacat alongside the returning F-14 Tomcat aesthetic. The Seacat is the faster, more maneuverable option optimized for dogfighting and hit-and-run engagements.

Both jets require coordinated two-person crews for full effectiveness. Solo players occupying both seats have degraded combat capability compared to organized pairs.

New Weapon: Interdictor Sniper Rifle

Snipers will be able to pick up the Interdictor, which comes equipped with a silencer.

Players can also complete challenges to unlock the game’s longest-range sniper rifle, the Interdictor.

The Interdictor is locked behind the Top Gun event challenges rather than available from day one. Complete the event objectives to permanently unlock it for use outside the event. The silenced long-range profile makes it a particularly strong choice for Wake Island’s open sightlines.

Spectator Mode and Custom Lobbies: BF Labs

Custom Lobbies and Spectator Mode capabilities are arriving with the Top Gun Update on August 18 through Battlefield Labs in Live. Building on Portal, Custom Lobbies are designed to give players more control over how they set up and run matches. We see these features supporting private sessions, community tournaments, creator-led events, and more organized ways to play with friends, squads, and wider community. Spectator Mode will also give players new ways to follow the action.

Battlefield Labs is EA’s live testing framework for features not yet ready for full production deployment. Custom Lobbies and Spectator Mode launching through BF Labs means player feedback directly shapes their final implementation.

USS Grant: New High Value Zone in REDSEC

Fort Lyndon’s Battle Royale map gains a new point of interest called USS Grant, a crashed carrier that will offer higher-value loot than standard points of interest and be tagged as a High Value Zone for its first few weeks.

Top Gun Characters: Rooster, Bob, and Warlock

Rooster, Bob, and Warlock from Top Gun: Maverick appear as fully voiced characters, performed by Miles Teller, Lewis Pullman, and Charles Parnell respectively. There is no Pete “Maverick” Mitchell or Tom Cruise in the crossover.

Each character appears as a playable Operator with dialogue recorded by the original actors. The collaboration marks the first time Battlefield has featured actors reprising live-action film roles within the game.
