Dota 2 Items: 🗡️ Complete Guide — Neutral Items, Trading, and Most Expensive ⚡

3 min

Items in Dota 2 are the primary driver of power scaling throughout a match. A carry with the right six-item build at 40 minutes is dramatically more powerful than the same hero at 40 minutes with suboptimal purchases. Understanding item roles, neutral item tiers, how the trading economy works, and which items define the current meta is foundational knowledge for every Dota 2 player.

How Item Purchasing Works

Items are purchased at the Main Shop (accessible anywhere on the map) or from Secret Shops (located in the jungle of both sides of the map). Some items are only assembled at specific shops.

Key purchasing rules:

  • Items not yet delivered appear in your Stash at base until picked up or couriered
  • The courier delivers items from your Stash to your hero during the laning phase
  • Selling items returns 50% of their gold cost
  • Some items cannot be dropped (boots of various types become a hero’s active movement item)

Neutral Items: The Tier System

Neutral items drop from jungle creeps and cannot be purchased. They are distributed through kills on neutral camps and scale across five tiers based on game time:

TierAvailable FromPower LevelExamples
Tier 17 minutesMinor stat bonusesBroom Handle, Fairy’s Trinket
Tier 217 minutesModerate utilityRing of Aquila components, Nether Shawl
Tier 327 minutesSignificant passivesCloak of Flames, Spider Legs
Tier 437 minutesMajor power spikesNinja Gear, Minotaur Horn
Tier 560 minutesGame-defining passivesBook of the Dead, Force Boots

One player can hold one neutral item at a time. Extras are stored in the team’s Neutral Item Stash accessible to all team members. Players frequently swap neutral items as better tier options become available.

Item Categories by Role

Carry items: Battle Fury (farming), Maelstrom/Mjollnir (AoE damage), Butterfly (evasion and attack speed), Daedalus (critical hit damage), Black King Bar (magic immunity)

Support items: Glimmer Cape (invisibility and magic resistance), Force Staff (repositioning), Aether Lens (extended cast range), Refresher Orb (double ultimate)

Initiator items: Blink Dagger (gap close and initiation), Shadow Blade (approach invisibility), Vanguard (survivability for diving)

Mid game power items: Aghanim’s Scepter (hero-specific ultimate upgrades), Shiva’s Guard (area slow), Pipe of Insight (magic resistance aura)

Item Trading in Dota 2

Dota 2 has two distinct “trading” concepts:

In-match item trading: heroes can freely drop and pick up items on the ground within a match. Supports often pool items to carries during the early laning phase.

Steam Marketplace trading: Dota 2 cosmetic items (skins, sets, couriers, wards, arcanas) are tradeable between players through the Steam trading system and the Steam Community Market. Prices fluctuate based on demand and item rarity.

Most Expensive Dota 2 Cosmetic Items

The rarest Dota 2 cosmetic items reach extraordinary prices on the secondary market:

Axe of Phractos$400+Early tournament exclusive

By the end of 2026, 24 Arcanas had been released in Dota 2. The first was Fiery Soul of the Slayer (Lina, March 7, 2013), and the most recent were Devotion of Dragonus (Skywrath Mage) and Resurrection of Shen (Vengeful Spirit), both released in April 2026.
