Gears of War: E-Day 🪖 Release Date, Editions, Prices, and Everything You Need to Know ⚡

9 min

Gears of War: E-Day is the most anticipated Xbox exclusive of 2026. Developed by The Coalition and People Can Fly, published by Xbox Game Studios, and built on Unreal Engine 5, E-Day is a prequel that takes the series back to the single worst day in the history of Sera: the moment the Locust Horde first erupted from underground and humanity had no answer for what was coming.

Set 14 years before the events of the original Gears of War, Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, two soldiers from the Coalition of Ordered Governments, must survive the Emergence Day in which a race of subterranean creatures known as the Locust Horde emerges from their underground lair and overwhelms the surface world of Sera. The game is set in the city of Kalona, a new location for the franchise.

This guide covers the release date, all editions and their prices, exactly what the Collector’s Edition includes, the Open Beta, pre-order bonuses, and Game Pass availability.

Pre-Order Bonuses (All Editions)

Pre-ordering any edition of Gears of War: E-Day grants three bonuses, valid for purchases made before 7:59 AM PDT on October 6, 2026:

  • Early access to the Open Beta starting August 6, 2026
  • Exfil Dom Legendary character skin for Dominic Santiago
  • Exfil Weapon Skin Set for three weapons: Chainsaw Lancer Prototype, Gnasher Shotgun, and Longshot Sniper Rifle

Note: the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack from the Premium and Collector’s Editions is only available to use in the campaign, not in multiplayer.

Players who digitally pre-order are automatically granted Early Access to the Open Beta and do not require a beta code. Players who pre-order a physical edition should expect to receive a Beta Code from the retailer at the point of sale.

Open Beta: August 6 to 10, 2026

Pre-orders unlock early access to an Open Beta running August 6 through August 10, 2026.

The Open Beta focuses on the multiplayer component of E-Day, giving players a hands-on look at the Versus and Horde Siege modes before the campaign launches in October. The Exfil Dom skin and Exfil Weapon Skin Set from the pre-order bonus are available to use in the beta from August 6.

Game Pass: Play Day One at No Extra Cost

Gears of War: E-Day is available on Game Pass from day one for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. This covers PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. If you are already subscribed, you pay nothing additional to play the full game on October 6.

The Game Pass version does not include early campaign access (that is exclusive to Premium and Collector’s pre-orders), but it does include access to the full game at launch and all base game content.

What Is E-Day About?

The plot of Gears of War: E-Day focuses on the first 24 hours of the Locust invasion. It’s a deliberately tight timeframe: the chaos of first contact, when no one knew about the horde living beneath Sera’s surface. Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago are the emotional heart of the story.

Fourteen years before Gears of War, war heroes Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago return home to face a new nightmare: the Locust Horde. These subterranean monsters, grotesque and relentless, erupt from below, laying siege on humanity itself. Built from the ground up with Unreal Engine 5, Gears of War: E-Day delivers unprecedented graphical fidelity.

Marcus Fenix is voiced again by John DiMaggio and Dom Santiago by Carlos Ferro, both returning to their original roles. The game is set in Kalona, a new city not previously featured in the franchise.

Play Gears of War: E-Day with Low Ping Using ExitLag

Gears of War: E-Day’s multiplayer modes, Versus and Horde Siege, are online-first experiences where your connection to Xbox’s servers determines how your inputs register in every fight. The Gnasher’s hit registration, Lancer spray timing, and active reload windows are all affected by latency and packet loss in ways you feel immediately in a cover-shooter with tight mechanical tolerances.

ExitLag is a connection optimizer used by over 30 million players across 4,000+ game titles. It analyzes multiple network routes in real time and selects the fastest, most stable path between your device and the game’s servers, replacing your ISP’s default routing with one built for gaming performance.

Features that directly benefit Gears of War: E-Day players:

  • Real-Time Optimization: Continuously selects the lowest-latency route to Xbox servers, keeping hit registration and ability timing consistent across long online sessions.
  • Multipath Technology: Routes game data through multiple simultaneous paths so packet loss never causes a missed Gnasher shot or a failed active reload to register incorrectly.
  • Traffic Shaper: Prioritizes Gears traffic above background applications so downloads and other activity cannot spike your ping during an active Horde wave or Versus match.
  • Multi-Internet: Supports up to four simultaneous connections, eliminating disconnections from ranked Versus sessions at critical moments.

Pro Tips: Gears of War E-Day Editions and Pre-Orders

  • Pre-order any edition before August 6 specifically for the Open Beta early access: All pre-orders grant Open Beta access, but the early access window starts August 6. Players who pre-order after the beta begins still get in, but miss the first day. If you want maximum time with the multiplayer before October, pre-order before August 6.
  • Buy the Premium Edition Upgrade only if you have already committed to the Standard: If you know you want early campaign access and the seasonal cosmetic packs, the Premium Edition at $99.99 is a better entry point than buying Standard and upgrading for a combined $99.99. They cost the same.
  • Order the Collector’s Edition through the Xbox Game Studios Shop for guaranteed availability: The Collector’s Edition is limited. Third-party retailers may sell out before launch. The official Xbox Game Studios Shop at shop.xboxgamestudios.com is the most reliable source.
  • Game Pass subscribers: download the beta from August 6 at no additional cost: Game Pass Ultimate includes the Open Beta. If you are a subscriber and are undecided on purchasing, the August beta is a free evaluation window before October 6.

Common Mistakes When Buying Gears of War: E-Day

  1. Assuming the Premium Edition is available physically: The Premium Edition is digital only. There is no physical box for the $99.99 tier. If you want a physical copy with Premium content, the only option is the Collector’s Edition at $299.99, which includes the Premium digital upgrade alongside physical items.
  1. Expecting the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack to work in multiplayer: The Bravo Squad Weapon Pack is exclusively a campaign item. It does not appear in Versus or Horde Siege. If multiplayer cosmetics are your priority, the Exfil Weapon Skin Set from the pre-order bonus is the multiplayer-compatible weapon cosmetic.
  1. Waiting until October 6 to pre-order and missing the Open Beta: The Open Beta runs August 6 to 10. Pre-ordering after the beta closes still gets you the Exfil cosmetics, but you will have missed the multiplayer preview entirely. If trying the game before committing to a purchase tier matters to you, pre-order before August 6.
