The game revolves around two teams of five players each, engaging in territorial disputes, where each team defends its part of the map. Each player controls a character called a champion, each with unique abilities.

In addition to players, various AI-controlled creatures populate the game. Eliminating them rewards players. These rewards, collected during the match, are used by League of Legends characters to level up after gaining experience points and becoming more powerful.

They also earn gold, which can be used for in-game purchases. The more money accumulated, the greater the purchasing power, allowing players to buy stronger items to defeat enemies.

What is League of Legends

Developed by Riot Games, League of Legends is a game that undoubtedly boasts thousands of fans worldwide. It falls under the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) genre.

It’s a free-to-play game monetized through skins that customize weapons and League of Legends characters, which can be purchased with real money and converted into in-game currency.

The main objective of the League of Legends is to advance into the enemy base and destroy the main building called the Nexus.

However, to bring down the enemy base, players must first destroy all towers and adversaries in their path.

The game features a magical setting and over one hundred and forty characters with varied storylines and gameplay circuits. Players devise offensive strategies in a world of magic, featuring mages, wizards, tanks, and many others.

League of Legends Game Modes

League of Legends offers a variety of game modes to cater to different playstyles and preferences.

Here’s a breakdown of the main categories:

Current Permanent Modes:

  • Summoner’s Rift (5v5): The classic League of Legends experience. Two teams of five champions battle to destroy each other’s Nexus. This mode comes in two flavors:

    • Normal: Unranked play for casual matches and learning new champions.
    • Ranked: Competitive play where players climb the ranked ladder based on skill.

  • ARAM (5v5): Aram stands for “All Random All Mid.” This chaotic and fun mode throws players into a single-lane map (Howling Abyss) with random champions.

  • Teamfight Tactics (TFT): A strategic auto-battler where eight players draft champions, build their armies, and fight on a shared board until one player remains.

Rotating Featured Game Modes:

  • These modes are temporary and come and go throughout the season. They often feature unique rules, special win conditions, or even entirely new maps. Here are some popular examples:
    • Ultra Rapid Fire (URF): A fast-paced mode with reduced cooldowns and increased mana regeneration.
    • One for All: All players on a team are randomly assigned the same champion.
    • Nexus Blitz: A shorter, faster-paced version of Summoner’s Rift with unique events and objectives.

Past PvE Game Modes (Player vs Environment):

  • These cooperative modes have been retired but may return in the future. They pit players against AI-controlled enemies. Some examples include:
    • Odyssey: Extraction: A PvE adventure mode with a narrative and unique challenges.
    • Doom Bots: Players face off against superpowered AI versions of champions.

Riot Games may introduce new modes or retire existing ones in the future.

For the latest information on available game modes, you can check the official League of Legends website.

Summoner's Rift: Main League of Legends Map

showcasing summoner's rift, the main map in league of legends

The primary map in League of Legends is called Summoner’s Rift.

It’s a mirrored map where two teams of five champions face off, with the objective of destroying the enemy Nexus, a large structure located deep within their base.

Here’s a breakdown of the key features of Summoner’s Rift:

Lanes and Turrets:

  • The map is divided into three lanes: Top laneMid lane, and Bot lane. Each lane has three turrets progressively closer to the enemy base. These turrets provide vision and attack enemies who come too close.
  • Destroying these turrets is crucial as they protect the Inhibitor towers behind them, which grant powerful buffs to nearby minions when destroyed.

  • Between the lanes lie mirrored jungle areas. These areas are filled with neutral monsters that grant gold and experience when killed.
  • Junglers are a specialized role that focus on controlling these areas, ganking enemy lanes (surprise attacks), and securing objectives like powerful neutral monsters.

  • Several key objectives are scattered throughout the map that provide strategic advantages:
    • Rift Herald: A powerful monster that grants a temporary buff to a champion that lets them create a path directly to an enemy tower.
    • Baron Nashor: An extremely powerful neutral monster that grants a significant buff to the entire team that defeats it.
    • Dragon: There are several types of Dragons that spawn throughout the game, each granting a unique team buff upon defeat.

  • Towers are capable of dealing damage to the enemy team and provide visibility above the fog of war. Thus, they should be the first structures to be destroyed to limit the opponent’s field of vision.

Nexus and Inhibitors:

  • The Nexus is the heart of each base and represents the core that needs to be destroyed for victory.
  • Inhibitor towers, located behind the inner most turrets in each lane, grant powerful buffs to nearby minions if destroyed. These buffed minions are much harder to kill and push harder against enemy defenses.

Base and Shops:

  • Each team has a base where they can heal, buy items, and respawn after being defeated. Shops located within the base offer a wide variety of items that champions can purchase to enhance their abilities and stats.

Understanding the map and its various elements is essential for strategic play in League of Legends.

By effectively utilizing lanes, jungles, objectives, and your base, you can gain an advantage over your opponents and increase your chances of victory.

Howling Abyss: Aram Mode

Howling Abyss League of Legends Aram

Howling Abyss is a specific map designed for the ARAM (All Random All Mid) game mode in League of Legends. Here’s what sets it apart from Summoner’s Rift:

  • Single Lane: Unlike Summoner’s Rift’s three lanes, Howling Abyss features a single, symmetrical lane in the center of the map. This forces constant teamfights and fast-paced action.

  • Random Champions: In ARAM, players don’t choose their champions. Instead, the game randomly assigns a champion from their champion pool to each player. This injects an element of surprise and requires players to adapt to their champion’s strengths and weaknesses.

  • No Jungler: Since there’s only one lane, there’s no dedicated jungle area. The entire map revolves around the single lane and teamfights.

  • Limited Shopping: Once you leave the starting platform, you cannot return to the shop to buy items. You can only rely on items purchased before the fight begins, items found in the map, or gold earned during the match.

  • Health and Mana Regeneration: The Howling Abyss map doesn’t offer the usual health and mana regeneration found in Summoner’s Rift. Health and mana can be restored by:

    • Using potions purchased before leaving the platform.
    • Picking up Health Relics that spawn periodically throughout the match.
    • Having a champion on your team with healing abilities.

  • Focus on Teamfighting: With a single lane, limited resources, and no option to retreat and heal, Howling Abyss emphasizes teamfighting and coordination. The key to victory lies in working together with your team to outmaneuver and outplay your opponents.

Overall, Howling Abyss offers a unique and exciting twist on the traditional League of Legends experience.

It’s a great mode for casual play, practicing teamfighting skills, or trying out new champions you might not normally pick.

Champions: Characters League of Legends

Since its release in 2009, the game currently features over 160 champions, divided into several classes: Assassin, Mage, Fighter, Marksman, Controller or Support, Tank, and Unique.

Some of these classes exhibit a certain hybridism, for instance, a Mage might also have characteristics of an Assassin.

This class excels in mobility and has great strength in combat, capable of almost instantly annihilating characters, except for tanks, although they are equally vulnerable to being killed due to their fragility.

Therefore, precision in attacks is crucial for players controlling these champions.

Their main objective is to quickly eliminate opponents or specific targets and swiftly retreat from the danger zone due to their fragility.

Champions in this class include Zed, Akali, Katarina, Evelynn, LeBlanc, Kha’Zix, Fizz, Talon, Rengar, Shaco, Ahri, Pyke, Master Yi, and Irelia.

Assassin League of Legends

This class focuses on protecting the rear and providing team cover, specializing in long-range damage and known as glass cannons for their ability to deal high sustained damage per second.

However, they are fragile and should avoid direct confrontations.

Champions in this category include Ashe, Caitlyn, Miss Fortune, Draven, Quinn, Ezreal, Varus, Aphelios, Twitch, Corki, Kai’Sa, and Lucian.

League of Legends Marksmen options (jinx)

As the name suggests, this class supports the team by controlling groups, providing shields, healing, and increasing mobility.

They are essential in any team, addressing the team’s needs during battles.

Champions in this class include Lulu, Orianna, Nami, Zyra, Karma, Sona, Janna, Anivia, Bard, Taric, and Morgana.

Support Example League of Legends (Thresh)

These champions excel in melee combat damage with good resistance, allowing them to endure longer fights, favoring close combat with high mobility and crowd control.

However, they have a disadvantage against long-range characters.

Champions in this class include Nasus, Darius, Gwen, Illaoi, Fiora, Yasuo, Rek’Sai, Lee Sin, Tryndamere, Xin Zhao, Camille, Pantheon, and Jax.

Fighters Example in League of Legends

Mages are responsible for controlling the game, possessing crowd control abilities and magic spells.

They are effective at both close and long-range attacks, although their defense is not optimal due to their focus on offense.

Champions in this class include Ahri, Cassiopeia, Ziggs, Veigar, Lux, Lissandra, Viktor, Annie, Twisted Fate, Azir, Zoe, Ryze, and Malzahar.

Mage Champions in League of Legends, Ryze, Syndra, Brand

Similar to military tanks, these champions withstand damage and protect allies due to their high durability.

They excel in melee combat but have less powerful attacks, focusing on crowd control and holding the frontline for stronger damage dealers to gain an advantage.

Champions in this class include Braum, Malphite, Leona, Rammus, Alistar, Amumu, Shen, Galio, Poppy and Tahm Kench.

Roles in League of Legends

When you enter the game, one of the main questions is what will be my role.

This depends on the type of character you choose. In the Summoner’s Rift map, which is the most commonly used, characters have the following roles: Top, Mid, Jungle, Marksman, and Support.

Top Lane

Also known as the top lane, it is the upper route of the map near where each team’s players face off. Tanks and fighters stand out here due to their abilities, although in some cases, marksmen can excel. Since it is a route distant from other objectives, players often use teleportation for more agile and precise movement.

Mid Lane

Also known as the mid lane, the player responsible for this role controls the group, with mages standing out due to their magical abilities. Assassins have high mobility to assist in other routes and infiltrate the opposing team to eliminate weaker targets like marksmen. This route is between the top and bottom lanes, located amidst the main objectives of the map.

Known as junglers, they are the most unpredictable as they do not stay in lanes but rather in the middle of the jungle. As explorers of the game, they have the freedom to move around the entire arena and are responsible for eliminating epic monsters and providing support in lanes.

Marksman (Bot Lane)

Being an almost exclusive role, the user is accompanied by a support due to their fragility in defense. However, in battles, they stay behind allies, eliminating enemies from afar with precision and skill.

Support (Bot Lane)

They control the map’s vision, maintaining the team’s balance and health, responsible for supporting the marksman in the bottom lanes. Champions in this class are tanks or controllers, possessing more abilities to fulfill this role.

Acquiring Champions in League of Legends

Champions can be acquired in various ways, with the most common being purchasing them.

You can use Riot Points, in-game currency bought with real money, or Blue Essence, a kind of loot that you obtain in various ways during the game.

However, it is possible to acquire all the game’s champions without spending real money, as the game provides various ways to earn champions as you level up and complete other activities.

Older players typically already have all the champions.

Cost to Buy All League of Legends Champions

There are two main ways to acquire champions in League of Legends: using Riot Points (RP), the premium currency, or Blue Essence (BE), the in-game currency.

Here’s a breakdown of the cost to buy all champions with each method:

  • Riot Points (RP): This is the most direct way, but also the most expensive. As of May 20, 2024, you’d need approximately 125,925 RP to unlock every champion. The RP cost varies per champion, with newer ones being more expensive.

  • Blue Essence (BE): This is a more time-consuming method, but achievable through free gameplay. The total BE cost to buy all champions fluctuates slightly, but is currently around 511,500 BE. However, factors like champion shard acquisition and free champion rotations can reduce this cost.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • Champion Shards: Disenchanting champion capsules or chests you earn through gameplay grants champion shards. These shards can be used to permanently unlock specific champions for a BE cost (usually cheaper than buying them outright with BE).

  • Free Champion Rotation: Every week, a selection of champions are free to play for everyone. This allows you to try out different champions before committing BE or RP to unlock them permanently.

Overall, unlocking all champions in League of Legends can be expensive in terms of RP or time investment for BE.

However, with strategic use of BE, free champion rotations, and champion shards, you can gradually build your champion pool without spending real money.

How to Fix Lag in League of Legends

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Connect via ethernet: If possible, a wired ethernet connection provides a more stable and reliable connection compared to Wi-Fi.
  • Close background applications: Unnecessary programs running in the background can consume system resources, impacting game performance. Close them before launching your game.
  • Update your drivers: Ensure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card and network adapter. You can usually find them on the manufacturer’s website.
  • Adjust game settings: Many games offer graphics settings that you can adjust to reduce the workload on your PC. Lowering resolution, graphics quality, and other settings can help improve performance.

Ranks and Tiers in League of Legends

Similar to any other game, League of Legends worlds has a ranking system.

In this game, players have ten tiers, with seven of them having four divisions each.

The tiers are as follows:

    • Iron (Iron IV, Iron III, Iron II, Iron I)
    • Bronze (Bronze IV, Bronze III, Bronze II, Bronze I)
    • Silver (Silver IV, Silver III, Silver II, Silver I)
    • Gold (Gold IV, Gold III, Gold II, Gold I)
    • Platinum (Platinum IV, Platinum III, Platinum II, Platinum I)
    • Diamond (Diamond IV, Diamond III, Diamond II, Diamond I)
    • Emerald (Emerald IV, Emerald III, Emerald II, Emerald I)
    • Master
    • Grandmaster
    • Challenger

The last three are known as High Elo, with Challenger being the most coveted of all, requiring a long journey to reach.

Like any platform, there are restrictions on the categories you can play with to maintain game balance and fairness among players.

Usually, players can play with two tiers above or below their rank, except for Iron and Bronze, which can only play with Iron, Bronze, and Silver.

Starting from Platinum, you can play with those below your rank and one tier above, such as a Silver player being able to play with Iron, Bronze, Silver, and Gold (one tier above).

This same logic applies to other tiers, except for the top three tiers Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger, which cannot participate in duo games.

What is MMR

Matchmaking Rating is a value to determine the position of users, based on three factors:

  • The result of the MD10, the first ten games that a beginner plays after starting the game.
  • The difficulty level of opponents faced.
  • Performance in the current season or the previous season.

These factors are used to calculate the MMR value.

This value is similar to what many know as elo, which is used to identify positioning in ranked play.

However, it is widely used by the game itself to match opponents of similar skill levels to ensure balanced gameplay.

What are LP (League Points)

In League of Legends, LP stands for League Points.

It’s a crucial part of the ranked system that reflects your progress and skill level.

Here’s a breakdown of how LP works:

  • Represents Rank Progression: LP serves as the currency for climbing the ranked ladder in League of Legends. You gain LP for victories and lose LP for defeats.
  • Earning and Losing LP: The amount of LP gained or lost depends on your Matchmaking Rating (MMR), a hidden value that represents your true skill level. Players with higher MMR gain more LP per win and lose less per defeat, and vice versa.
  • Climbing Divisions: Typically, you need to accumulate 100 LP to advance from one division (e.g., Gold IV) to the next within your current rank (e.g., Gold).
  • Promotion Series: Reaching 100 LP doesn’t guarantee immediate promotion. You’ll enter a series of best-of-five promotion matches. Winning at least three out of these five crucial matches will take you to the next division or rank.

Here are some additional things to know about LP:

  • LP Gains are Dynamic: The amount of LP you gain or lose isn’t always the same. It adjusts based on your MMR and your division placement. If your MMR is higher than your current division, you’ll gain more LP per win to help you reach your appropriate rank.
  • Focus on Improvement: While aiming to win and gain LP is important, the core focus should be on self-improvement. By consistently honing your skills and game knowledge, your MMR will naturally increase, leading to more LP gains and a higher rank over time.

For a more detailed explanation of MMR, Rank, and LP, you can refer to the official League of Legends support article:

Demotion and Inactivity in Ranked Games

Demotion or inactivity is something every player wants to avoid. Demotion occurs when you reach zero LP and lose matches, resulting in the player being demoted by one tier.

For example, if you were in Silver II, you would be demoted to Silver III.

If you are in Division IV, you drop out of the league entirely.

On the other hand, inactivity occurs when a player spends too much time without playing ranked games.

This only affects players in Platinum and above. If you’re in these tiers, you start losing LP after twenty-eight days of inactivity for Platinum or Diamond.

Masters, Grandmasters, and Challengers lose LP after ten days of inactivity.

For Masters, Grandmasters, and Challengers, there are stringent rules to maintain these ranks:

  • Each ranked game played in these tiers is stored in your “immunity bank” until you accumulate a total of 10
  • Every day, one immunity game is deducted from this bank
  • If you let your immunity reserve reach zero stored games, you lose 100 LP per day until you start playing ranked games again and accumulate more.

How to Stand Out in League of Legends

When you decide to take the game seriously as a profession, your approach changes.

It’s no longer just a hobby, it’s your job.

If you want to become a professional player, you need to exhibit certain behaviors different from others.

Study the Game

Understanding not only the map, but also the characters and their abilities, is crucial.

Each character complements the others, so you need to visualize your team as a cohesive combat unit.

After each match, analyze spells, strategies, objectives, and more.

A single mistake can cost you the victory.

While the game involves a lot of strategy, motor skills are also crucial.

Don’t give up, and always try different playstyles to become more versatile.

Therefore, we can see that the life of a gamer is not so different from a job; it involves concerns and goals to be achieved. Gaming has become one of the most coveted professions nowadays, with tournaments generating millions of dollars each year, attracting many people.

There are even schools that teach people how to play professionally, allowing them to pursue gaming as a full-time occupation.

  • Adaptability: be flexible and willing to adapt your playstyle based on the needs of your team and the evolving game state. Sometimes, adjusting your strategy mid-game can turn the tide in your favor;
  • Continuous Learning: league of Legends is a complex game with constant updates and changes. Stay curious and actively seek out opportunities to learn and improve. Watch professional streams, study replays, and analyze your own gameplay to identify areas for growth;
  • Stay Positive: maintaining a positive attitude, even in the face of adversity, is essential for success in League of Legends. Avoid tilting or blaming teammates, and focus on what you can control to contribute positively to the game.

By following these tips and consistently honing your skills, you can increase your chances of standing out and achieving success in League of Legends.

Packet loss can cause a number of problems during online games, such as:

  • Interruption of the game, from freezes, to sudden movements;
  • Delayed responses, which can impair your game play, such as moving or shooting;
  • High levels of packet loss can make your connection to the game server unstable, leading to frequent disconnections or rubber-banding.

To avoid packet loss in any game, including League of Legends, using ExitLag, simply select the server that is closest to the game server or offers better routing for your connection. This can help reduce packet loss and improve overall network stability.

Therefore, always activate ExitLag before starting League of Legends to avoid packet loss during the game.
