Raiden Mortal Kombat: ⚡ Thunder God Complete Guide 🏆

4 min

Raiden Mortal Kombat is Earthrealm’s thunder god and one of the franchise’s most iconic figures. White robes, straw hat, and crackling lightning — Raiden’s design is immediately recognizable and his role as Earthrealm’s protector deity has made him central to every major MK storyline.

Mortal Kombat Raiden began as an almost invincible deity who guided Earth’s fighters from a position of authority, and evolved through MK9 and MK11 into a character whose well-intentioned decisions repeatedly caused catastrophic consequences. This arc gave him the franchise’s most complex moral journey among its recurring protagonists.

Raiden From Mortal Kombat in MK1 (2023) undergoes the most radical reimagining: Liu Kang has taken the divine role, and Raiden exists as a mortal — a young Earthrealm farmer who must learn to use lightning powers without the wisdom that divine experience would provide. This grounded version of Raiden is one of MK1’s most interesting character experiments.

Raiden’s Story Arc

Original and MK9 Timeline: Raiden received a cryptic message from himself across time — “He must win” — and misinterpreted it as instruction to allow Shao Kahn to invade Earthrealm. Every decision he made trying to prevent catastrophe accelerated it. His MK9 arc is a tragedy of good intentions.

MK11: Raiden defeats Shinnok and takes a darker stance — cutting the god’s head off and sending it as a warning to Outworld. This Dark Raiden version becomes increasingly authoritarian. The MK11 resolution involves fusing with Liu Kang to create Fire God Liu Kang, who resets the timeline.

Raiden Mortal Kombat 1 (New Era): A young Earthrealm farmer who discovers lightning powers. Without divine knowledge or authority, he must grow as a fighter and person within MK1’s story. One of the fresh starts Liu Kang’s new timeline enables.

Raiden’s Signature Moves

Lightning Bolt

Raiden’s primary projectile — a straight lightning attack thrown at full screen. Fast and safe on block from distance.

Teleport

Raiden vanishes in a flash and reappears behind the opponent. His primary approach and mix-up tool. Timing and positioning determine whether it is punishable.

Flying Thunder God

Raiden extends both arms and flies horizontally across the screen. A strong anti-jump option and gap closer that requires precise spacing.

Torpedo

A version of his horizontal flight that travels lower, hitting opponents who crouch. Creates a mix-up dynamic when alternated with Flying Thunder God.

Pro Tips: Raiden Mortal Kombat

  • Use Lightning Bolt to establish zoning control: Raiden’s Lightning is one of the faster projectiles in the franchise. Use it to challenge opponent approaches and force them to either block or jump, then punish their reaction.
  • Time Teleport for punishes, not random mix-ups: A predictable Teleport is punished by experienced players. Use it specifically after blocked projectiles or to punish recovery frames on specific moves.
  • Alternate Flying Thunder God and Torpedo against defensive opponents: Players who block high get hit by Torpedo. Players who stand get clipped by Flying Thunder God. Mixing both from mid-screen creates approach pressure.
  • Learn his reversal timing: Raiden has a fast reversal option that lets him punish overaggressive corner pressure. Know when to use it versus when to block and wait for an opening.

Common Mistakes Raiden Players Make

  1. Teleporting predictably: If you Teleport every round, opponents will sit and punish it. Fix: use Teleport only when you have a confirmed opening, not as your first round approach.
  2. Flying Thunder God into blocking opponents: Blocked Flying Thunder God is punishable. Fix: use it specifically against airborne opponents or to punish specific recovery states.
  3. Over-relying on Lightning at all distances: Lightning is weakest at close range where opponents can easily jump over it with a full punish. Fix: save Lightning for mid-to-far range and use normal attacks at close range.

Play Raiden Online Without Lag Using ExitLag

Raiden’s Teleport timing is one of the most latency-sensitive mechanics in Mortal Kombat. A Teleport that arrives half a frame late loses the punish window it was designed for. ExitLag’s optimized routing reduces this timing inconsistency.
