Unexpected Initiative Arc Raiders: 🎯 Complete Quest Guide 🏆

7 min

The Unexpected Initiative Arc Raiders quest catches many players off guard the first time they tackle it. Given by NPC Tian Wen inside Speranza, this mission pushes you into Buried City with a very specific and unforgiving requirement: complete everything in a single raid or start over.

Unexpected Initiative Arc Raiders is part of Tian Wen’s personal storyline focused on building a greenhouse to improve food production for your raider outpost. It unlocks after you finish both Industrial Espionage and Echoes of Victory Ridge, placing it in the early-to-mid progression window.

The goal is straightforward: visit two specific rooftops in Buried City, grab the required items, and extract in one go. You cannot split this across two raids, so planning your route before you drop in makes the difference between a clean run and a wasted attempt.

Unexpected Initiative Arc Raiders: Quest Requirements and Setup

Who Gives the Quest and When

Tian Wen offers Unexpected Initiative inside Speranza after you have completed the prerequisite quests. You must have both Industrial Espionage and Echoes of Victory Ridge finished before the dialogue option unlocks.

Once you accept, the objectives appear in your quest log pointing you toward Buried City. The two target locations are Grandioso Apartments and Piazza Roma, both close together on the western half of the map.

Before you drop in, equip a loadout built around speed and mid-range control. Here are the essentials:

  • Primary weapon: Shotgun or SMG for quick building clears
  • Secondary weapon: Pistol or light rifle as a reliable backup
  • Utility slot 1: Grappling hook or zipline tools to speed up vertical movement
  • Utility slot 2: Smoke grenades for escaping players or ARC encounters
  • Augment: Safe Pocket to protect your quest items if you go down

The Safe Pocket augment is especially valuable here. If you are downed with items in your regular inventory, another player can loot them. Safe Pocket protects a set number of slots from looting, keeping your Fertilizer secure even in the worst case.

How to Complete Unexpected Initiative in Arc Raiders

Step 1: Navigate to Grandioso Apartments

Grandioso Apartments sits in the southwest corner of Buried City. When you land, orient yourself toward the western edge of the map and move quickly. ARC patrols this area consistently, so moving with purpose reduces unnecessary fights.

Once you reach the building, find the inner zipline that runs up through the structure. Take it to the top floor, then climb the nearby stairs to reach the roof. On the roof, you will find Fertilizer stored inside orange planting pots.

Pick up the Fertilizer and secure it in your inventory. At this point you have completed the first objective, and Piazza Roma is directly northeast, only a short run away.

Step 2: Find Piazza Roma

Piazza Roma is close enough to Grandioso Apartments that you should reach it within two to three minutes on foot. Head northeast from the rooftop or drop down and sprint across the street level.

Here are the key points to remember when navigating between locations:

  • Stick to rooftop paths when possible to avoid ARC ground patrols
  • Use your grappling hook to cut travel time between buildings
  • Check your minimap before descending to street level, as ARC patrol routes vary
  • Other raiders may be pushing Piazza Roma for their own quests, so expect player conflict

Once you arrive at Piazza Roma, locate and collect the second required item to complete both objectives.

Step 3: Extract and Turn In

After collecting both items, your focus shifts entirely to extraction. Do not take unnecessary fights. A failed extraction means losing both quest items and starting the in-raid portion over again.

  1. Confirm both items are in your inventory before heading to extract
  2. Avoid the center of Buried City where traffic is heaviest
  3. Use smoke grenades if you encounter players near the extraction point
  4. Extract as fast as possible and return to Tian Wen in Speranza
  5. Turn in the items to complete the quest and collect your rewards

Pro Tips: Unexpected Initiative Arc Raiders

  • Plan your drop point: Land as close to Grandioso Apartments as possible to minimize early travel time and reduce exposure to other raiders who drop hot.
  • Use the rooftop route: Moving along rooftops keeps you above most ARC patrols and gives you sightlines on enemy raiders before they see you.
  • Bring extraction insurance: A Safe Pocket augment means even if you are downed, your quest items survive and you can recover them if you revive or your squad picks them up.
  • Time your raid: Dropping in with fewer players in the lobby reduces competition at both locations. Slightly off-peak hours offer cleaner runs.
  • Squad up for first attempt: Solo is fully viable, but running with a squadmate to watch your back while you loot the rooftops makes the quest significantly easier on the first clear.

Common Mistakes Unexpected Initiative Players Make

  1. Splitting the quest across two raids: Many players grab the Fertilizer in one raid and plan to get the second item next time. The quest requires a single-raid completion, so both items must be extracted together. Fix: always plan to complete both objectives before extracting.
  2. Ignoring the Safe Pocket augment: Running without Safe Pocket means a player kill near extraction can strip your quest items. Fix: always bring at least one Safe Pocket slot when running quest items in Buried City.
  3. Fighting every ARC encounter: ARC patrols between Grandioso Apartments and Piazza Roma cost time and ammo without any meaningful reward during this quest. Fix: disengage or route around ARC patrols to reach objectives faster and extract with more health and ammo remaining.

Does ExitLag Help in Arc Raiders?

Arc Raiders is an online extraction shooter, which means your connection quality directly affects how fast your inputs register and how cleanly your extractions go. High latency creates desync between your actions and the server, which can cost you a successful extract in a moment that matters.

ExitLag is a game connection optimizer, not a VPN. It analyzes multiple network routes in real time and selects the fastest, most stable path between your device and Arc Raiders servers, reducing packet loss and shaving milliseconds off your response times.

For extraction gameplay specifically, ExitLag’s Multipath Technology sends your data through multiple routes simultaneously. If one path degrades, the others maintain your connection without interruption. Its Multi-Internet feature also supports up to four simultaneous internet connections, so a sudden drop on your primary ISP does not end your raid.

ExitLag supports Arc Raiders and over 4,000 other titles on PC and mobile, with 1,500+ servers across 190+ countries. You can download ExitLag and test it during your next raid run.
