Rubick, the Grand Magus, is Dota 2’s most intellectually demanding support hero. His ultimate, Spell Steal, copies the last spell cast by any nearby enemy hero, turning the entire enemy team’s toolkit into his own arsenal. Playing Rubick at a high level requires knowing what every enemy hero does, recognizing which stolen spell to prioritize, and positioning correctly to survive long enough to use it.
Rubick’s Abilities
Telekinesis: Lifts an enemy into the air and slams them into the ground. Stuns the target and any units near the landing point. Up to 4.5 second stun duration with level 15 talent.
Fade Bolt: Launches a bolt of magical energy that jumps between nearby enemies, reducing their attack damage. Excellent for zoning, harassment, and reducing the threat of high-damage physical cores.
Arcane Supremacy (Passive): Increases the potency of all spells Rubick casts, including stolen ones. This passive applies to every spell he uses, making stolen ultimates like Black Hole or Reverse Polarity significantly more powerful.
Spell Steal (Ultimate): Steals the last spell cast by any enemy hero within a medium radius. The stolen spell benefits from Arcane Supremacy. Rubick is usually played when the enemy has powerful ultimate abilities, such as Enigma’s Black Hole or Magnus’ Reverse Polarity. If Rubick steals Zeus’s spells, he becomes a dangerous monster.
Skill Order
Standard skill order:
- Telekinesis (level 1) — for early lane control and setup
- Fade Bolt (levels 2, 3, 5) — primary damage and harassment tool
- Telekinesis (level 4) — second point for increased stun duration
- Spell Steal (levels 6, 12, 18) — priority whenever available
Arcane Supremacy is leveled as points allow after Fade Bolt and Telekinesis are maxed.
Best Items for Rubick (Patch 7.41e)
Early game:
- Arcane Boots — mana sustain for Rubick’s spell-heavy kit
- Magic Wand — stat efficiency and burst HP/mana
- Wind Lace — movement speed to chase stolen spell opportunities
Core items:
- Aether Lens — increases cast range and mana pool; exceptional value for landing Telekinesis from safer distances
- Blink Dagger — enables the initiation and escape plays that Rubick’s Telekinesis combos require
- Force Staff — repositioning tool and alternative to Blink for more conservative styles
Situational:
- Aghanim’s Scepter — extends Spell Steal duration significantly
- Octarine Core — reduces all cooldowns including Spell Steal reset time
- Shadow Blade / Glimmer Cape — survivability and approach options
These are the most critical items that you should consider buying when picking Rubick. Your build may vary a little bit from game to game but in most cases, Aether Lens and Blink Dagger help you the most.
Rubick Arcana: Magus Cypher
This is Rubick’s Arcana and it has a lot of great features. It changes many visual effects and augments their sound effects.
Magus Cypher (Rubick) is one of the most sought-after Arcanas. This popular hero has strong visuals and a unique Spell Steal mechanic. The price in 2026 is around $27.
The Magus Cypher Arcana for Rubick transforms the visual presentation of every Spell Steal. Each stolen spell appears in a distinct animated form, with unique particle effects and sound design that differ from the original spell’s appearance. This gives the Arcana practical in-game visibility: opponents can clearly see Rubick’s stolen spell, and Rubick’s team can immediately identify what he is about to use.
Features of the Magus Cypher:
- New model, animations, and spell effects
- Unique Spell Steal visual indicators per stolen ability category
- Custom ambient effects on ability activations
- Altered sounds on all abilities
Rubick Cosmetic Sets and Skins
Rubick has one of the largest cosmetic collections in Dota 2, reflecting his popularity across all skill levels. Major sets include:
- The Pilfered Principality Set — full armor and hat combination
- The Conjuror’s Contraptions — gadget-themed cosmetic set
- The Magus Cypher (Arcana) — the highest tier cosmetic
Sets are obtainable through the Steam Marketplace, Dota 2 item drops, and trade. Individual pieces can be mixed across sets for custom appearances, which Rubick’s community has made into a distinct cosmetic metagame.
Rubick Counter Picks
Strong against Rubick: Heroes with short-range or self-target spells that are hard to steal (Drow Ranger, Phantom Lancer), heroes that have multiple quick spells so the stolen one is rarely the dangerous one (Invoker, if playing around spell order).
Weak against Rubick: Enigma (Black Hole steal), Magnus (Reverse Polarity steal), Tidehunter (Ravage steal), Zeus (Arc Lightning creates easy kill setups with stolen spells).
