Godfrey Elden Ring: ⚔️ Full Boss Guide & Location Guide 🏆

7 min

Godfrey Elden Ring is a two-phase Legend Boss that many players consider one of the most satisfying fights in the game. He is massive, aggressive, and hits incredibly hard, but his attack patterns are readable and his telegraphs are among the most honest in the entire game. That combination makes him punishing to fight blind and extremely rewarding once you understand his rhythm.

Godfrey Elden Ring is encountered as Godfrey, First Elden Lord, and transitions in Phase 2 into Hoarah Loux, Warrior. The transition happens at approximately 60% health and is marked by a cutscene in which Godfrey sheds his golden armor and reveals his original warrior identity from before he was made into the Elden Lord. Each phase has distinct attack patterns, requiring you to adapt mid-fight.

The most important thing to know going in: Godfrey is weak to Lightning Damage and resistant to Holy Damage. If you’re running a Lightning Incantation build or a weapon with Lightning infusion, this fight becomes significantly more manageable. Avoid Holy damage outputs entirely.

Where Is Godfrey in Elden Ring?

Location: Leyndell, Royal Capital

Godfrey Elden Ring is located in Leyndell, Royal Capital, accessible after defeating two major shardbearers and collecting their Great Runes. Once inside Leyndell, follow this route to reach him:

  1. From the Western Capital Rampart Site of Grace, head south along the outer ramparts
  2. Climb onto the massive golden tree branch that extends from the building
  3. Follow the branch upward toward a balcony
  4. Head north through the fog gate to enter Godfrey’s arena

The arena itself is a wide, open rooftop space that gives you plenty of room to maneuver. This works in your favor during Phase 2 when Hoarah Loux’s grabs need space to dodge.

Is There a Golden Shade Version?

Yes. There is also a Golden Shade of Godfrey found earlier in Leyndell, which serves as a practice encounter for the real fight. The Golden Shade is located in the Erdtree Sanctuary, reached by following the main path through the capital. Defeating the shade is not required to progress but provides an excellent preview of the attack patterns you’ll face later.

Godfrey Phase 1: First Elden Lord

Phase 1 Attack Patterns

In Phase 1, Godfrey fights with his massive axe and uses ground stomp attacks to create shockwaves. Key attacks to recognize:

  • Axe Slam: Godfrey jumps and slams his axe downward. Roll away from him as he descends rather than toward him.
  • Ground Stomp Shockwave: He stomps and sends rock fragments out from the impact point. Roll to either side to avoid the wave entirely.
  • Horizontal Swipe: A wide axe sweep at close range. Roll through toward him rather than backward.
  • Overhead Combo: Two-hit overhead sequence. The second hit is delayed; wait for both before counterattacking.
  • Shockwave Charge: Raises his axe and sends a line of shockwaves across the ground toward you. Dodge sideways.

Phase 1 Strategy

Godfrey is aggressive but predictable. Every attack has a clear windup animation. The fundamental approach:

  1. Stay at medium range to bait axe swings rather than shockwaves
  2. Roll through swipes rather than backward, as backward rolling leaves you outside counterattack range
  3. Attack once or twice after each dodge, then reset
  4. Never attack more than twice after a punish window unless you’ve confirmed no follow-up is coming

Summons are effective here. Spirit Ashes like Black Knife Tiche or Mimic Tear keep his aggression split and give you breathing room to land hits.

Godfrey Phase 2: Hoarah Loux, Warrior

The Phase 2 Transition

At approximately 60% health, a cutscene triggers in which Godfrey declares he has “found the warrior’s nature again” and strips away his armor. He becomes Hoarah Loux, Warrior, his true identity before the Greater Will elevated him to Elden Lord.

Phase 2 is fundamentally different. Hoarah Loux fights with his bare hands, using grapples, ground slams, and earthquake attacks that require completely different dodge timing.

Hoarah Loux Attack Patterns

  • Grab Attack: He rushes forward and attempts to grab you for a throw. Roll to the side rather than backward.
  • Ground Slam Combo: Slams the ground with his fists, sending out shockwaves in a burst pattern. Jump over the ground shockwaves to avoid them entirely.
  • Spinning Kick Combo: A sequence of spinning kicks in multiple directions. Keep dodging until the animation ends.
  • Roar + Stomp: He roars and stomps, creating large AOE ground damage. Roll away from the stomp’s impact point.

Key Tips for Phase 2

Phase 2 requires a different mentality:

  1. The grab is the most dangerous attack. When he rushes you with arms extended, dodge sideways immediately.
  2. Jump over ground shockwaves rather than rolling through them. Jumping clears the wave entirely and avoids the tracking sweep.
  3. Hoarah Loux fights faster than Phase 1 Godfrey. Reduce your combo length from two hits to one after each punish to avoid getting caught mid-animation.
  4. Maintain aggression. Hoarah Loux refills health at low percentages if you stall too long in some fight configurations, so keep pressure on.

Damage Type Weaknesses

Lightning Incantations like Lightning Spear, Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike, or weapons with Lightning affinity deal noticeably more damage. However, any well-upgraded weapon at the correct level will clear the fight.

  • Summon: Black Knife Tiche (mobility), Mimic Tear (pressure), or Banished Knight Oleg (aggression)
  • Weapon Buff: Lightning Grease on physical weapons for bonus damage
  • Talisman: Shard of Alexander (increases Ash of War damage), Lightning Scorpion Charm (if using Lightning)
  • Flask Split: Balance Crimson and Cerulean flasks based on whether you’re using Incantations

Pro Tips: Godfrey Elden Ring

  • Practice on the Golden Shade first: The Shade in Erdtree Sanctuary uses the same Phase 1 moves and lets you learn patterns with lower stakes before the real encounter.
  • Save your best consumables for Phase 2: Exalted Flesh, Boiled Crab, or weapon buffs are most valuable in Hoarah Loux’s phase when the stakes are highest.
  • Roll sideways on grabs, never backward: The grab has forward tracking. A backward roll leaves you in the path of the animation while a sideways roll steps completely out of range.
  • Jump Phase 2 ground shockwaves: This is one of the few fights in Elden Ring where jumping is mechanically superior to dodging for a specific attack type.
  • Don’t extend punish combos in Phase 2: Hoarah Loux has faster recovery than Phase 1 Godfrey. One hit after a dodge is safer than two in most situations.

Common Mistakes Godfrey Elden Ring Players Make

  1. Using Holy damage: Players with Coded Sword or other Faith builds sometimes don’t check resistances before the fight. Fix: Check Godfrey’s resistances before entering. Swap to a Physical or Lightning weapon if your primary output is Holy.
  2. Attacking too aggressively after Phase 2 transition: The cutscene ends and many players immediately swing, only to get caught by Hoarah Loux’s opening grab. Fix: Wait one second after the cutscene ends before doing anything. Let him open first.
  3. Not using the Phase 1 stomp punish window: After Godfrey stomps the ground and shockwaves go out, there is a long recovery window. Many players back away instead of punishing. Fix: After rolling the shockwave, immediately move in and attack during his ground recovery.

Keep Your Connection Stable for the Fight

Co-op summons and invasions are active throughout Leyndell. If you’re summoning help for the Godfrey fight, connection quality affects how reliably summon signs appear and how smooth the session runs. Lag during a boss fight means delayed dodge inputs and missed punish windows that can cost you the run. ExitLag routes your connection through optimized paths to Elden Ring’s servers, reducing packet loss and latency consistently.

ExitLag is not a VPN. It’s a game connection optimizer that uses Multipath Technology to select the fastest, most stable route between you and the game’s servers in real time. Download ExitLag for PC and face Godfrey Elden Ring with a connection that matches your preparation.

Godfrey Is Worth Mastering

Godfrey Elden Ring stands out as one of the most complete boss designs in the game: readable, punishing, fair, and epic in scale. Phase 1 teaches patience and reads, Phase 2 tests your ability to adapt under pressure. Beating him cleanly is one of the better feelings Elden Ring offers.
