The New Minecraft Update was the highlight of Minecraft Live, which aired on September 26. Mojang revealed a frozen biome, a brand new mob, and the first new dimension the game has received in more than 14 years.
On top of that, the show locked in several important dates. That is why we gathered everything confirmed so far about the New Minecraft Update, along with what is still unknown.
In short, the New Minecraft Update is the next game drop, adding ice caves and a frozen zombie before the end of this year. Meanwhile, the new dimension, The Sift, arrives on Java and Bedrock in 2027, but you can already explore it in Minecraft Dungeons II.
What Changes In The New Minecraft Update

The next game drop takes players underground, with a new cave type in the same family as dripstone caves and lush caves.
Ice Caves: The New Underground Biome
Among the New Biomes announced, ice caves arrive first. They work as a rare underground extension of the cold biomes that already exist in the game.
Inside this new environment, you will find:
- Ice and calcite: regular, packed, and blue ice mix with calcite to form walls and pillars.
- Icicles: they grow naturally from the ceiling, giving the caves a sharp, jagged look.
- Ice crystals: they grow on the floor and emit a soft light, which makes them great for decoration.
- Lava: interestingly, the developers added lava to create a contrast between fire and ice.
The Frozen Zombie And The Freezing Effect
The biggest threat in these caves is a new zombie variant. Notably, Mojang has not given it an official name yet, so “frozen zombie” is a placeholder for now.
When it lands a melee hit, it deals damage and also applies a freezing effect that stacks. As a result, long fights against several of them become much more dangerous.
New Mobs And New Items In The Update

This time, the New Mobs and New Items all revolve around the same theme: the cold.
Confirmed New Mobs
So far, Mojang has shown two brand new creatures:
- Frozen zombie: a hostile variant found in ice caves, and some of them throw ice balls.
- The Sift inhabitant: a creature from the new dimension shown in the trailer, still without an official name.
New Items And Blocks
The New Items are useful for both combat and building:
- Ice ball: deals damage and knocks the target back. Frozen zombies drop it, but you can also craft it.
- Freezing potion: a new potion brewed with ice balls that freezes whoever it hits.
- Ice crystal: a light-emitting block that grows on cave floors.
- Icicle: a block that grows from the ceiling and works great for themed builds.
In practice, the freezing potion could shake up PvP. After all, freezing an opponent at the right moment can decide a fight on competitive servers.
The Sift: Minecraft’s New Dimension

The most talked-about reveal of the show was The Sift. It is the game’s fourth dimension, alongside the Overworld, the Nether, and the End, and the first one added in more than 14 years.
What We Know About The Sift So Far
A few details are already confirmed:
- It is a beautiful, vibrant dimension full of souls, with its own environments, inhabitants, and dangers.
- It features areas such as the Meadow and the Carapace.
- It arrives on Minecraft Java and Bedrock in 2027, with no exact date yet.
- How players will reach it in the base game has not been revealed.
How Can You Enter The Sift Right Now?
If you do not want to wait until next year, there is a shortcut. The New Dimension is already available in Minecraft Dungeons II, released on September 29:
- Install Minecraft Dungeons II on your platform.
- Explore the game’s new interconnected world, which now lets you jump.
- Look for the rifts scattered across the map.
- Step into one of them to be transported to The Sift.

How To Get Ready For What Is Coming
Pro Tips: Before You Update Your World
- Back up your world: updates change terrain generation, so a backup lets you roll back if something goes wrong.
- Test in a separate world: snapshots and previews are unstable. Therefore, never open your main world in them.
- Keep cold areas unexplored: new biomes usually generate only in chunks that have not been loaded yet, so snowy regions you have never visited are your best bet.
- Wait for plugins and mods: modded servers depend on compatibility updates. That is why migrating too early can break everything.
Play With Stability Using ExitLag
Every content drop fills up servers. In that situation, high ping and packet loss make blocks snap back into place and mobs teleport around you.
ExitLag is not a VPN. Instead, it analyzes multiple routes in real time and uses Multipath technology to keep your connection stable, even if one path fails.
If this already bothers you, learn how to lower your ping on Minecraft servers and how to play Minecraft with friends without hassle. Then grab ExitLag for PC, for Android, or for iOS.
New Minecraft Update: The Ice Arrives Before The New Dimension
First come the ice caves and the frozen zombie. Then, The Sift expands the game with its first brand new dimension in over a decade.
Until then, Minecraft Dungeons II works as a preview of what is ahead. So keep an eye on the test versions, because the New Minecraft Update should start showing up in them very soon.
