Worlds 2026 patch: Riot nerfs Ambessa and K’Sante in LoL

5 min

The Worlds 2026 patch is locked in. On Wednesday, October 7, Riot Games released League of Legends (LoL) Patch 26.20, the version that will be used throughout the World Championship.

The update primarily targets professional play. Riot wants to rein in champions that have been common in competitive matches while giving less-established picks a better chance.

In total, the Worlds 2026 patch buffs 11 champions, nerfs five, and changes three notable items. Ambessa, K’Sante, Ashe, and Yunara are among the champions receiving nerfs.

Worlds begins October 15 in the United States. Teams have only a few days to assess how the changes could affect picks, bans, and game plans.

What’s changing in LoL Patch 26.20?

Riot is looking to shake up the meta without overhauling it. Champions such as Kennen and Kindred received buffs, while picks considered especially effective in coordinated play were toned down.

Varus and Sylas appeared in the patch preview, but their proposed changes did not make the final release.

Replay access is also changing. Players can access replays of their own matches, but third parties will no longer be able to download those files.

Champions buffed in Patch 26.20

The 11 buffed champions are Diana, Kennen, Kindred, Lillia, Lucian, Mordekaiser, Neeko, Smolder, Swain, Tahm Kench, and Vayne.

The changes cover several roles and could give teams more options when building their drafts.

Champion Key change
Diana W shield’s bonus health ratio increases from 11% to 14%.
Kennen E attack speed bonus increases from 40–80% to 50–90%.
Kindred W deals more damage to monsters; E slow duration increases from 1 to 1.5 seconds.
Lillia R sleep duration now scales from 2.5 to 3 seconds.
Mordekaiser Q scales better at later ranks; R has a shorter cooldown at early ranks.
Swain Base magic resist rises from 31 to 34, but base armor falls from 25 to 23; W gains damage and a shorter cooldown.
Tahm Kench Q’s base heal at max rank increases from 25 to 50.
Vayne Health regeneration is adjusted, and Q costs less mana.

Lucian, Neeko, and Smolder round out the buff list. For the bot lane, Lucian and Smolder are particularly relevant because they offer alternatives to more established marksman picks.

Champions nerfed in Patch 26.20

Ambessa, Ashe, Cassiopeia, K’Sante, and Yunara are the five champions receiving nerfs. These adjustments aim to reduce advantages that can be especially pronounced in high-level and professional play.

The Ambessa and K’Sante changes target important tools in their trading patterns:

  • Ambessa: Her passive’s damage decreases from 5–30 (+25% bonus AD) to 5–25 (+20% bonus AD).
  • K’Sante: His W costs five more mana at every rank. Its damage reduction drops from 30/75% to 25/70% in its normal and All Out states, respectively.
  • Cassiopeia: Her base health and mana are reduced, weakening her early laning phase.

These adjustments do not necessarily push the champions out of competitive play. Their impact will depend on how teams adjust their pick and ban priorities.

Ashe and Yunara: the numbers before the nerfs

The two marksmen enter Worlds with different results across ranked and professional play.

According to OP.GG, in the Master+ bracket for the version labeled Patch 16.19 on the platform, Yunara recorded a 50.45% win rate and a 19.45% pick rate. Ashe posted a 49.34% win rate and a 5.17% pick rate.

In professional play, figures supplied from GOL.gg, filtered to Summer 2026 competitions, show a 55% win rate and 13% priority score for Yunara. Ashe had a 54% win rate and an 8% priority score.

Champion Master+ win rate Master+ pick rate Summer win rate Summer priority score
Yunara 50.45% 19.45% 55% 13%
Ashe 49.34% 5.17% 54% 8%

These figures provide context for the balance changes, but they do not establish that Ashe and Yunara were frequently played together as a duo. Priority score reflects competitive priority and is not the same metric as ranked pick rate.

In Patch 26.20, Ashe loses attack damage per level, dropping from 3.5 to 3. The change is intended to lower her damage without removing the utility she brings to a team.

Yunara loses two damage per hit on her Q at every rank. The slow from her W also no longer stacks with other slowing effects.

The intention is to make it harder to scale safely into later stages of a match without necessarily removing either marksman from competitive consideration.

Items changed in Patch 26.20

Items built for damage, mobility, and engage are also being adjusted. The biggest shift in purpose concerns Hextech Rocketbelt, which Riot wants to make less effective as an escape tool.

Item Change
Experimental Hexplate The ranged champion modifier drops from 70% to 50% of the bonus values.
Hextech Rocketbelt Ability haste drops from 20 to 10; active damage increases from 100 (+10% AP) to 135 (+15% AP).
Runaan’s Hurricane Bolt damage decreases from 65% to 60% of attack damage.

With Hextech Rocketbelt, the goal is to reward offensive engages rather than have the item function almost like an extra Flash.

The Experimental Hexplate change primarily affects ranged champions, while Runaan’s Hurricane loses some damage on its secondary bolts.

Worlds 2026 meta: when teams will test the patch

The Worlds 2026 meta will begin taking shape during the Play-In, held October 15–18 in Los Angeles. The Swiss Stage follows October 23–31 in Allen, Texas.

The knockout stage also begins in Allen. Quarterfinals run November 3–6, followed by semifinals on November 7–8.

The grand final is scheduled for November 14 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Patch 26.20 will be used from the beginning to the end of the tournament. The Worlds 2026 patch is designed to broaden teams’ options, but the matches themselves will determine whether the buffs and nerfs change draft priorities.
